What is Deshbandhu College famous for?

Gurcharan Singh (82) often remembers the morning of 1952 when, on a walk to the market in Kalkaji, he heard a lot of excitement about some kind of inauguration. Just 12 at that time, he enthusiastically followed the crowd to sneak into the celebration and get hold of sweets and cold drinks being distributed. Deshbandhu College had been established by the Ministry of Rehabilitation in the refugee colony of Kalkaji in 1952; (above) Gurcharan Singh (82) was 12 at the time. (Adrija Roychowdhury) Singh was, at that time, living with his mother and six siblings at the refugee camp in Kalkaji Temple.

He had found shelter in Delhi a couple of years back, having escaped the horrors of communal violence at his hometown of Quetta in Balochistan. “Those days we had no money, nor any means of livelihood. Education was hardly anyone’s priority,” said Singh. He recalled how, in the early 50s, he would attend a government school in Kalkaji during the day and spend the evenings working in a firecracker factory nearby to earn a living for his family.

Singh recently retired from the college, where he worked in the administrative division, and lives with his family in Kalkaji. In these initial years after Independence, large parts of Delhi had been drawn up by the Ministry of Relief and Rehabilitation, specifically for housing Partition refugees.

  • This was a very turbulent time and the government’s priority was to provide means of livelihood and housing for the refugees.
  • Issues of schooling and higher education, although important, were raised much later, only from 1949 onwards,” explained Shrishti Khanna, research scholar at Delhi University, currently working on the history of education in Delhi.

“Also, several existing schools and colleges in Delhi were transformed to provide shelter to the refugees.” Later, most of these schools and colleges started admitting these children for education as well.

Is Deshbandhu College evening?

It seems, Delhi University has become a hub for changes. First, the implementation of the semester system, then the four-year undergraduate programme and now it is set to usher one more change – evening colleges are all set to bid adieu and will gradually shift to the regular morning mode.

The basic reason for this change is because the evening colleges which were originally established for working students have regular students now. Two evening colleges — Deshbandhu College (Evening) and Ram Lal Anand (Evening) have already switched to morning hours. “The evening college of Deshbandhu has been rechristened Ramanujan College,” shares its principal Ajay Kumar Arora, “and we have already started holding classes in the morning.

Right now they have only 12 rooms and we are soon going to start constructing a new building for them. The new campus will be spread over seven acres and it will also have hostels. Right now we are sharing our things but soon they will be a separate entity all together.

  • The original idea for an evening college is no more and also the serious component was less in the evening classes.
  • Those who don’t get admission in the morning colleges take admission in the evening ones – which was not the basic idea.
  • It was also quite difficult for students living far away to stay till late – especially girls.

So, this is a positive step for betterment of the students.” Ram Lal Anand (Evening) is now Arya Bhatt College. Talking about its benefits Dr S A Jaffri, the college principal says, “It will be definitely beneficial for students as they will get more hours to study and can also devote time to extracurricular activities.

It was actually the need of the hour because evening colleges had actually lost their utility.” The shift can also be seen in the context of the undergraduate programme to a four-year structure because the schedule of classes under the four-year programme is expected to become more tight and with this, the number of lectures will also increase.

So, it will be difficult to conduct classes till late. There are nearly 11 evening colleges in DU – Shyamlal College, Sri Aurobindo College, Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Motilal Nehru College, Deshbandhu College, Zakir Husain College, Satyawati College, Ram Lal Anand College, Dyal Singh College and Pannalal Girdharlal Dayanand Anglo Vaidic College (PGDAV).

How many colleges are in South Campus?

The south campus of Delhi University comprises of a total of 19 Colleges.

What are off campus colleges in DU?

Off Campus Colleges of DU: Highlights There are other off-campus colleges such as Acharya Narendra Dev College, Delhi College of Commerce, Kamla Nehru College, and Zakir Husain Delhi College which are situated in the central part of New Delhi.B.Sc.B.A, B.Sc.

What is North Campus and South Campus?

This article aims to clear one of the major confusions in every DU aspirant’s minds- that of the choice of the campus they go to. Before joining DU (Delhi University), one of the major dilemmas in every student’s mind is that of which campus to go for- North Campus or South Campus.

    Factor North Campus South Campus
Proximity to Other Colleges The colleges here are closer to each other and thus students often visit other campuses for fests, competitions and so on. Barring a few colleges, most colleges- LSR, JMC, Gargi-KNC to name a few are far from each other and thus travelling between colleges is not always convenient.
Campus Common Areas Complementing the ‘Campus Vibe’, North has various common areas like VC Lawns, Arts Faculty etc. where students can collect and hang out (or protest). South Campus has no such options.
Cost of Living The cost of living is lower here- rentals are lower, transportation cost is low and even avoidable as most places are within walking distance. Being in the ‘posh’ areas, property rentals are higher, also since average distances are more between PGs/flats and colleges, transport cost tends to be higher.
Nightlife Despite being dominated by students, North Campus, that is- Kamla Nagar, Vijay Nagar, etc. sleeps by 11 PM. South Campus has a more vibrant nightlife- being closer to clubs, pubs and general areas that bustle during late hours.
Safety North Campus is relatively very unsafe- phone snatchings and even robberies are common. South Campus is in general very safe- while you might think twice before stepping out during late hours in North Campus, no such problem exists in the South.
Places of Interest Kamla Nehru Ridge, St. Stephen’s, Chandni Chowk, Red Fort India Gate, Hauz Khas, Nehru Place

While there are several differences in terms of colleges, campus life differs in these regards. North Campus is generally considered to be a more exposed environment and thus offers more scope for learning through extracurricular activities, while the peace and beauty (for the most part) of South Campus is unmatched.
